About Us

Friends of Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge is an all-volunteer group promoting public awareness of the Refuge & participating in the learning & growing occurring every day, as the USFWS strives to reconstruct a part of Iowa's long lost tallgrass prairie.
Funding is provided for projects beyond the reach of federally appropriated dollars, including numerous internships & funding to schools for field trip transportation costs.
The Prairie Point Nature Store, managed & staffed by the Friends, offers unique shopping, books not available at other stores, educational toys & items from local artists.
Visit the Refuge often to see the everchanging prairie, watch for bison, elk & other wildlife, enjoy the walking trails, take a ride on the bike trail.
Consider volunteering at the Refuge - individuals of all ages, talents & backgrounds can help. The only requirements are enthusiasm & an interest in nature!
